Crowns & Bridges

What is a Dental Bridge?

Gaps in your smile can be unsightly and make it difficult to eat and talk. If you’re missing a tooth, your dentist can fill in the gap using dental bridges.

A dental bridge is simply a false tooth held into place by the real teeth on either side of the gap. Dental bridges can be an alternative to other dental services like dentures or dental implants. After receiving your dental bridge, you will have to care for it like you would any normal tooth. This means brushing and flossing daily, as well as regular visits to the dentist.

Different Kinds of Dental Bridges

One of the most common dental bridges is the fixed bridge. This means the teeth on either side of the gap will be capped with dental crowns and fused together with another crown that fills the gap. Another common dental bridge is the cantilever bridge. As the name implies, this type of bridge only uses one tooth as an anchor. The Maryland bridge is one style of dental bridge that doesn’t use crowns to hold the false tooth in place. Instead, small wings made from metal or ceramic are bonded to the teeth on either side of the gap. This method is less invasive, but requires that the two adjacent teeth are strong and healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which style of dental bridge is best for me?

There are several different kinds of dental bridges available, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. It’s important that you discuss your unique needs with your dentist before making any decisions.

How do I care for my dental bridge?

In many cases, you can treat your dental bridge just like you would treat a regular tooth. Don’t forget to schedule regular appointments at your local dental clinic.

Are dental bridges expensive?

The cost of dental bridges varies depending on their style. However, most dental bridges are more affordable than more invasive treatments like dental implants.

Crowns & Bridges

Dental Crowns

If you have suffered damage to your teeth, you might need to consider dental crowns. Crowns, or dental caps, are a long-lasting form of dental restoration that completely covers a tooth or dental implant. Titirangi Dental is dedicated to providing the best cosmetic dentistry and dental care services in West Auckland, and that includes making sure your teeth look and function as they were meant to.

Why Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Our dentists often recommend crowns when the health or strength of a tooth has been compromised by a large cavity or filling. For example, if you have had root canal treatment, you will likely require a crown to cover and protect the weak tooth while providing structure and function. This is often the only way to salvage a damaged and decayed tooth, as well as improve the appearance.

In addition, if you have lost one or more teeth and are having a dental implant installed, you will need a crown attached to the titanium root or implant.

How Do Dental Crowns Work?

Crowns can be a bit more expensive than some other dental restorative solutions, but they are the most beneficial to dental health, making them a worthwhile investment.

They are made in a separate laboratory to fit precisely to your tooth size and bite. They can be shaped to join the tooth in a process called marginal adaptation, which is designed to seal out bacteria. While placing the crown inside your mouth, the dentist can properly contour the contact to the adjacent teeth so that food will not get wedged between them.

What Are Dental Crowns Made of?

There are a number of different crown material options for different situations. Full gold crowns last the longest, as they are cast as a single piece of gold and are less likely to break. These are ideal for back molars.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns (PFM) give you the tooth-like look of porcelain on the top layer with the strength of metal alloy underneath. Although incredibly strong in compression, porcelain used this way may be fragile in tension.

Full porcelain crowns look the most natural. New technology has allowed the bonding of porcelain crowns (no metal) to the tooth sub-structure. This allows for a very strong crown. Above is an example of porcelain ‘Emax’ crowns.

Testimonials

I first went to Titirangi dental in Feb 2022 with a terrible tooth ache. Luke and the team not only helped me get that tooth back to good health but have worked closely with me on gum issues since. I like that Luke talks me through each step before, during and after which helps me stay informed. I also appreciate the they provide options for treatment. I avoided dentists for my whole adult life to my own detriment. Each time I went in, it left me not feeling the best and they didn’t take a holistic approach but that has changed now.

Amazing clinic with a great team, the friendly receptionist and supportive team makes my dental visit comfortable experience. Morgan Scanlan, she is an amazing dental hygienist, she is caring and kind. Dr Luke Simpson is very professional and respectful, he handles patient with a great patience and caring. Highly recommended dental service for all your dental needs.
